Truancy

A student is considered truant when he/she is absent without parental permission or knowledge. When a student appears to be truant, a report will be made to the school social worker who will contact the parents. Truancy is a very serious matter that contributes to low student achievement and may result in school disciplinary action or a school referral to the court.

Excused Absence

A student may be granted an excused absence when the absence is to the educational advantage of the student or due to:

  1. Illness, injury, or other insurmountable condition.

  2. Illness or death of a member of the student's immediate family.

  3. Recognized religious holidays and/or religious instruction.

  4. Medical appointments.

  5. Participation in an approved activity or class of instruction held at another site.

  6. Prearranged absences of educational value with the principal's prior approval.

  7. Head lice infection (up to four days during the school year).

The law requires that parents send a written excuse when a student is absent. Please send with your child when he/she returns to school. When a student accumulates five (5) unexcused absences within a calendar month or ten (10) unexcused absences within a 90 day calendar period, the student must report to the principal or designee.

Tardiness

Students arriving at school after 8:45 AM must report, with their parent(s) or guardian(s) to the front office before going to class. When a child is frequently tardy, the school may make a referral to the social worker for a home visit.

Personal Property

The school cannot assume responsibility for loss of any personal property such as jewelry, cameras, hats, etc. Unless requested by a teacher as part of an assignment, all such items are to be left at home. Please do not allow your child to bring candy, gum, snacks, or sodas to school. Items such as toys, electronic games or cartridges, radios, cassette players, and tapes may be brought to school without prior approval for the office. If so, they will be taken from the student and not returned until the parent meets with the principal or designee. Matches, lighters, tobacco products, fireworks, ammunition, pocket knives, toy guns, guns or weapons of any kind are not permitted on school property. If a student is found to have any of these items in possession, the item will be confiscated and disciplinary action taken.
